When we were called upon to assist the monastic community at St. Leo Abbey, they welcomed us with open arms. We spent multiple days working on the roof of the Abbey church and several other places throughout the historic compound — 11 leaks over the chapel and 2 over St. Leo Hall, all found and repaired.
It was an experience unlike any other in our 40 years of work. At one point while we were on the roof, we could hear the choir practicing directly beneath our feet. Working near the bell tower — surrounded by that music, that history, and that peaceful setting — was truly a moving experience that neither of us has ever forgotten.
The monastic community was gracious, warm, and deeply appreciative of our work. When the rains came shortly after, the roof held. They were kind enough to put their gratitude in writing.
About Saint Leo Abbey — Founded in 1889 by Benedictine monks on land conveyed by Judge Edmund F. Dunne, Saint Leo Abbey is one of the oldest and most historic religious communities in Florida. The Abbey Church itself — known affectionately as "the church that orange juice built" — was consecrated on January 29, 1948, its sandstone quarried from Indiana and traded for boxes of the Abbey's own citrus. Elevated to an abbey by Pope Leo XIII in 1902, the Benedictine monks went on to establish Catholic parishes throughout northern peninsular Florida. Today the Abbey remains an active monastic community, welcoming retreatants and visitors to share in its peaceful, prayerful way of life on the shores of Lake Jovita in Pasco County.
“Steve and Marshall, The Saint Leo Abbey Community extends its sincere appreciation to you for your recent roof repair to our historic Church of the Holy Cross. We have hired several other companies who have tried unsuccessfully to fix the problems with the roof but you have finally done it! The torrential rains of last week were a test for the previous roof concerns but thankfully your work excelled beyond our expectations. The entire monastic community and those who attend services here continually remark at how happy they are that the entire church is now able to be utilized. You have helped to alleviate many of our day to day concerns and for that we are very grateful. God Bless, The Saint Leo Abbey Monastic Community”
